Located in Hohhot city, the capital city of Inner Mongolia, Inner Mongolia University of Technology（IMUT）grew out of the former Suiyuan Higher Technical School, which was established as the first institution of higher learning in the newly formed Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1951. In 1958, with the support from Tsinghua University, the School was expanded and upgraded into Inner Mongolia College of Engineering, which was first under the direct administration of the then Ministry of Mechanical Industry and later the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery. In 1983, the administration of the College was transferred to the government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 1993, the College was upgraded once again and renamed Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT). Occupying an area of 212 hectares (3,178 mu), the University consists of three campuses: Xincheng campus, Jinchuan campus and Junggar campus.
After over 60 years of development, centering around the traditional engineering disciplines, Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) has now grown into a multidisciplinary university with distinct features of its own, offering undergraduate bachelor’s, postgraduate master’s and PhD programs in as diverse branches of learning as technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities, economics, management, law, education and art. At present, there are 24 colleges (divisions or centers) and 62 research institutes in the University. 3 first-level discipline PhD programs, 1 second-level discipline PhD program, 19 first-level discipline master programs and 9 second-level discipline master programs are offered at the University; and 1 post-doctor research station is established. The University is also qualified to confer professional master’s degrees in 5 fields including Masters of Engineering (in 14 sub-fields), MBA, MEM, MTI and MSW. Altogether, 71 bachelor programs are offered at the University. Due to its high quality of teaching, the University is qualified to select and send its top undergraduate graduates to do their master’s studies at other universities without the requirement of the students taking the national postgraduate entrance exam. At present, 23,000 bachelor undergraduate and associate degree students, 4,200 postgraduate master students and 218 PhD students are enrolled as fulltime students at the University, including 174 international students.
During the “12th Five-year Plan Period”, more than 1,000 research projects were carried out by the faculty with grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (The 863 Program) or the National Science and Technology Support Program. The University won 38 significant provincial and above level research and development awards, including 2 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Advancement Award，17 first and second prizes of the Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Advancement Award and the Inner Mongolia Natural Science Award，16 first, second and third prizes of the Inner Mongolia Award of Excellency for Research in Philosophy and Social Sciences. 213 patents were granted and over 2,000 academic research papers were published on academic journals collected by SCI, EI, ISTP and CSSCI.
The University employs a faculty and staff of 2,045 people, including 1,437 faculty members. Among all the faculties, there are 155 professors, 455 associate professors, of which 54 are PhD student tutors and 557 are master student tutors. 82.67% of the faculty members hold either the PhD degree or the master’s degree. Among all the faculties, 71 receive special allowances from the State Council or are awarded the honor of “The Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts”; 1 person was selected to be supported by “the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Support Program (Level 1 and 2)”; 9 won the prizes of “Inner Mongolia Excellent Talent Award”; 12 were selected to be supported by “The Project of Excellent Talents of the New Century of the State Ministry of Education, 48 were selected to be supported by “Inner Mongolia Grassland Talents Project”, 7 research teams were awarded “The Grassland Talents Innovation Team”, 42 were selected to be supported by “The New Century 321 Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), 11 were selected to be supported by “The 111 Higher Education Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), and 14 were selected to be supported by “The Inner Mongolian Project of Support for Scientific and Technological Talents”. A great number of well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad have been employed as guest professors of the University.
At present, the University has 5 feature disciplines recognized by the State Ministry of Education, 4 undergraduate programs of study selected as the experimental programs for cultivating outstanding engineers, 1 national level extracurricular engineering training base for college students, 1 national level experimental teaching demonstrative center, 1 national level pilot reform undergraduate program of study, 4 provincial level undergraduate programs of study selected as key programs for support by the regional government, 25 brand undergraduate programs of study of Inner Mongolia, 7 provincial level demonstrative centers of experimental teaching, 16 provincial level quality teaching teams and 15 teachers designated teaching masters of the Region.
In 2006, the University was rated by the Ministry of Education as “Excellence” in the appraisal of the teaching and education quality of the undergraduate programs of study. In 2012, The University was rated among the Top 50 Best Graduate Employment Universities. The University was designated by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 32 national level culture and all-round education bases for college students. The University won the honors of “The Model University for Party Construction and Ideological and Political Work” and “The Model University for Student Employment”. Other honors won by the University include “The Model Educational Institution”, “The Model University for Ideological and Political Work”, “The Model University for Civics Development”, “The Model University for Students Work”, “The Model University for Talent Cultivation” and “The Model University for Promoting Harmony Between Ethnic Groups”.
Believing in the idea of academic exchanges promoting mutual development, the University has been active in cooperation and exchanges with universities home and abroad. Regular cooperative relations have been established with scores of prestigious universities both home and abroad，including such domestic universities as Tsinghua University and Tianjin University and dozens of universities in the U.S., Germany, Japan, Canada and Russia. In 2005, the University was approved to provide the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Scholarship to students of the country of Mongolia and in 2007 the University was approved to provide the Chinese Government Scholarship to overseas students. The University has signed agreements of cooperation and set up joint innovation centers or R&D platforms with more than 40 large- and medium-sized enterprises in Hohhot, Baotou, Wuhai and Ulanchab.
Embracing the university motto of “be learned and practical while pursuing high ideals and moral values”, the University has built up an academic tradition of “seeking truth for its application in the real life”. Over the 60 years since its establishment, more than 100,000 students have graduated from this University. Our alumni can be found in diverse industries and professions both in and out of Inner Mongolia, many of whom have become leaders and backbones of large and medium sized enterprises, experts and scholars of institutions of higher education and research institutes and key figures of the Party and government agencies at various levels. Standing at this new starting point of history, through continuing with the education reform, Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) will strive to improve the teaching quality and services to society, making greater contributions to the social and economical developments of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and China through active participation and contribution. Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) will work harder and make greater achievements in enhancing intensive development and transformation through conducting high quality research and building up its academic disciplines so as to build the University into a high quality one with distinct features in both teaching and research.
